On Sunday, February 15, 2026, from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM, the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) inaugurated its seminar series titled ” Sthapotto O Dorpone Sthopoti “ at the IAB Multipurpose Hall. The keynote speaker for the debut session was the eminent academic, urban designer, and planner, Architect Haroon Ur Rashid. During the seminar, he shared insights from his extensive professional career, his philosophy of work, architectural thoughts, and provided vital guidance for young architects.

Sponsored by Asian Paints (Bangladesh) Ltd., the seminar saw significant engagement with 157 online registrants and a total attendance of approximately 250 architects, including on-spot registrations. The presence of numerous senior architects from across the country further enriched the event.
In his address, Architect Haroon Ur Rashid remarked:
“Architectural practice is not merely a process of designing structures; it is a powerful medium to make the environment beautiful and humane. Architecture captures human emotion, psychology, social reality, and the physical memories of history.”

With over three decades of experience in urban development, water management, and the sanitation sector, the renowned architect has worked with international organizations such as the World Bank and UNDP across various countries in South and Southeast Asia. He has long served as a key advisor in Bangladesh’s urban planning and sanitation development. Ar. Rashid earned his Bachelor of Architecture from BUET in 1973, securing first place in the merit list. He later completed his Master’s in Urban Design from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and received specialized training in urban finance, infrastructure development, and housing from Harvard University. He has also served as the Vice President and General Secretary of IAB and was a member of the editorial board for the Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC) 1993. In 1997, he received the IAB Design Excellence Award for the design of the 20-story Sena Kalyan Bhaban.
Reflecting on his work in the development sector, he emphasized that improving people’s quality of life requires their direct participation and involvement. “Equitable and effective architecture is impossible without participatory planning,” he noted. He also shared anecdotes from his professional journey, inspiring both the younger and veteran generations of architects.

Overall, the “ Sthapotto O Dorpone Sthopoti ” series proved to be a vital platform for professional self-reflection, intergenerational dialogue, and a reconsideration of the humane philosophy of architectural practice. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A where participants shared their own experiences and perspectives, further enriching the discussion.
The seminar was conducted by Ar. Sayeda Akter, Secretary (Seminar & Convention) of the 26th Executive Council. Speeches were also delivered by IAB President Ar. Prof. Dr. Abu Sayeed M. Ahmed and General Secretary Ar. Dr. Masud Ur Rashid. The session was moderated by Ar. Mohammad Mahmudur Rahman Masum.
