Winning Design Selected for New Academic Building at Dhaka Residential Model College

The design for a new academic building at Dhaka Residential Model College has been finalized through an architectural competition.

Established in 1960, Dhaka Residential Model College is one of the country’s leading educational institutions. Recently, a design competition was organized for a ten-storey academic building. The competition was jointly organized by the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) and the Dhaka Residential Model College authorities.

The competition was announced on October 5 last year. Nearly 150 architectural consultancy firms registered, and around 90 design proposals were submitted. Following extensive evaluation and analysis by the jury panel, the final winners were selected.

The award ceremony was held on Sunday evening at the IAB Centre in Agargaon, where the winners were honored and an exhibition featuring the top six design proposals was inaugurated.

The chief guest at the event was Md. Mahbubul Haque Patwary, Additional Secretary of the Planning Wing, Secondary and Higher Education Division, Ministry of Education. Special guests included Brigadier General Mohammad Jaber Hossain, Principal of Dhaka Residential Model College, and Ahmed Ashfakur Rahman, Publicity Secretary of the Old Remians Welfare Association. The session was chaired by Architect Professor Dr. Abu Sayeed M Ahmed, President of the 26th Executive Council of IAB.

From Dhaka Residential Model College (DRMC), the jury board included Principal Brigadier General Mohammad Jaber Hossain and Acting President of the Old Remians Welfare Association, Mashiur Rahman. Other jury members were Architect Jalal Ahmed, Principal Architect of JA Architects; Architect Patrick D’Rozario, Principal Architect of Synthesis Architects; and Architect S.M. Nazimuddin Payel, Associate Professor in the Architecture Discipline at Khulna University. Architect Patrick D’Rozario delivered remarks on behalf of the jury.

At the event, representatives from the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) included General Secretary Architect Dr. Masud Ur Rashid; (Treasurer) Architect Chowdhury Saiduzzaman; Secretary of Professional Affairs Architect M. Wahid Asif; Secretary of Publication and Publicity Architect Md. Shafiul Azam Shamim; Secretary of Seminar and Convention Architect Saida Akter; Competition Director Architect Ahmed Firoz Ul Haq Robin; and Deputy Director Architect Muhammad Shafayet Hossain.

In the design competition, the architectural consultancy firm Form3 Architects secured first place, led by its Principal Architect, Didarul Islam Bhuiyan. ArchiGround Limited, led by Architect Nabi Newaz Khan, achieved second place. Arcadian Architects secured third place under the leadership of Architect Towhidur Rashid. Additionally, Zero D Consultants, Kshetra, and Roofliners_Studio of Architecture received special mentions.
