“Sthapotto O Dorpone Sthopoti” Seminar Series Held at IAB

On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, from 6:30 PM onwards, an important session of the seminar series titled “Architect and Reflection in Architecture” was held at the Multipurpose Hall of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB). The keynote speaker of the session was renowned architect R. Nahas Ahmed Khalil, Principal Architect of Arc Architectural Consultants.

Architect Nahas Ahmed Khalil was born in 1958 and graduated in Architecture from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1982. At the beginning of his professional career, he worked at The Environment Incorporate and later at WIE. He subsequently founded Arc Architectural Consultants and, as its Principal Architect, has made significant contributions to architectural practice in Bangladesh over the years. His designs distinctly reflect a harmonious integration of context, nature, and user requirements. The use of local materials, climate-responsive design, and natural light and thermal control are among the defining characteristics of his work.

Approximately three hundred architects attended the event, reflecting the professional community’s strong interest in the program. The presence of many senior architects further enriched the session.

In his presentation, Architect Nahas Ahmed Khalil stated that architectural practice is not merely about constructing buildings; rather, it is an integrated process where context, users, environment, and economic realities work together. He emphasized that a successful design can only be achieved when functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability are maintained in balance.

Drawing from his professional experience, he demonstrated how a design concept evolves into a built reality and highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary coordination throughout the process. Through his work on residential, commercial, and institutional projects, he has made notable contributions to the built environment of the country. His projects consistently demonstrate contextual design, climate sensitivity, and user-centered planning.

Addressing young architects, he emphasized the importance of practical experience, observation, and the ability to understand users’ needs. He also stressed the value of participatory and context-sensitive design approaches.

The seminar was moderated by Saida Akter Mumu. Architect Tawsif Munwar participated as a discussant and shared his reflections on the keynote presentation. During the question-and-answer session, participating architects shared their experiences and raised questions, adding further depth to the discussion.

In the concluding session, the honorable President of Institute of Architects Bangladesh, Professor Abu Sayeed M Ahmed, presented a commemorative token to the keynote speaker. Closing remarks were delivered by the Secretary General of IAB, Dr. Masud Ur Rashid, who highlighted the importance of such knowledge-based initiatives.

Overall, this session of the “Architect and Reflection in Architecture” seminar series served as an important platform for exchanging professional experiences, fostering intergenerational dialogue, and reconsidering the practical and humanistic dimensions of architectural practice.
